Chapter 12

“He didn’t tell me anything.” I had Kieran on speaker phone as I poured a small glass of wine. “He just asked me out and said for me to wear jeans because we were going to do something physical.”

“Ooh,” Kieran said. “I like the sound of that.”

I snorted and took a drink. “Not that kind of physical.”

“How do you know?” she asked.

I sighed. “Because I won’t let it.”

“Then you’re a fool,” Kieran said. “You like him don’t you?”

I didn’t get to answer because a knock sounded on the French doors. I motioned Jacob in.

“I need to go, Kieran.”

“Call me later,” she said.

I clicked the phone off and turned to Jacob. He was dressed in dark jeans and a black t-shirt that showed off the muscles in his arms.

“Would you like a glass of wine?” I asked.

He shook his head and grinned. “Nope. And you might not want to consume too much.”

I gave him a weary look. “Why?”

He gave me a wink. “You’ll see. Let’s go exercise Thor before we leave.”

I carried my wine with me to the backyard and sipped while Jacob threw a ball to Thor. I tried not to ogle him too much…but I failed miserably.

Once they were done playing, and I was done with my drink, I locked up the house and followed Jacob out to his truck.

“Are we going out to eat?” I asked as I buckled myself in.

“We’ll grab something there,” he replied cryptically.

I turned in my seat. “Okay, buster, where’re you taking me?”

He laughed. “I admit I didn’t want to tell you until I had you securely in the truck for fear you might cancel.”

“Is it here in Trinity Falls?”

He shook his head. “I thought for our first date, you might want to go outside the town.”

Our first date? Was he expecting more than one?

“Thank you for that,” I said softly. “It’s kind of you to take my feelings into consideration.”

He chuckled. “Well, seeing as how you’ve had nothing but dismal dates in public, I didn’t want to subject you to that tonight.”

I settled back into the seat. “You better not be a dismal date tonight.”

He grinned and turned on the radio. “I’ll try not to be.”

“If you won’t tell me where we’re going, can you tell me how long it takes to get there?”

“On a Friday night? I’d say about an hour.”

“You’re taking me into the city?” I asked. “Into Portland?”

“I am.”

I bit my lower lip. “So it’s in Portland, we can grab something to eat there, but you didn’t want me to have too much to drink in case I—oh my gosh! No!”

Jacob threw his head back and laughed. “Figured it out, did you?”

“You’re taking me to Twin Oaks Park?”

“I am. I haven’t been there in over ten years.” He furrowed his brow. “I think the last time I went I was on leave right after boot camp. Me and a couple guys took some girls there to show off.”

I smiled at that image. “I haven’t been there since Brody was a boy.
